Moon Party Koh Phangan

Over its impressive 30 year lifespan, Koh Phangan's Full Moon Party has grown from a small hippy ritual on the beach into a full scale dance festival that attracts ten of thousands of revellers every month to the island's infamous Sunrise Beach at Haad Rin. A small town has developed around the party, filling the space between the two bays that border Koh Phangan's southern peninsula. Party goers now enjoy a full suite of hospitality services with everything from bakeries to upmarket boutiques lining the streets and a full range of accommodation options that includes simple wooden bungalows, air-conditioned rooms and plush poolside suites. The party itself has long been an international event with DJs arriving from all over the world to entertain the crowds and a string of bars along the beach offering an eclectic mix of music that ensures everyone finds their perfect venue.

Obviously, a party on this scale attracts plenty of media interest and the publicity surrounding the Full Moon on Koh Phangan has not always been favourable. This has not deterred people of all ages and nationalities from attending the event month after month, with particularly popular dates including Christmas and New Year. The European summer months also bring large numbers of visitors to the island, especially younger travellers on their gap year or university holidays. In recent years the party has also become a favourite amongst Thai holidaymakers who travel down from Bangkok to catch the big name DJs and spend a long weekend partying in the sun. Signature drinks and attractions have developed over the years. The vodka Red Bull buckets are legendary fuel for the dancefloor, while fire dancers and jugglers draw the crowds on the beach and fireworks guarantee an explosive atmosphere.

Specific venues in and around Had Rin Beach now attract a loyal clientele. Bars like the Backyard and the Outback offer a more personal party experience, with groups of friends and party regulars meeting up for a communal rave. The success of the monthly Full Moon gathering on Koh Phangan has also inspired similar events in other locations. The Black Moon Party at Samui's lake view venue now attracts a dedicated following of House and Techno fans, while back on Koh Phangan, the Half Moon Party on a forested hillside in Baan Tai is a favourite with long term tourists and those who feel the Full Moon bash has become to commercial.

Whichever party you choose, celebrating moon madness is just one of many ways to enjoy the beauty of Koh Phangan. Many islanders and long term residents feel the party encourages too much excess on an otherwise unspoilt tropical island. Initiatives such as beach clean-up campaigns and community policing have reduced the hedonism to a certain extent, but the fun continues unabated month after month and certainly constitutes a significant part of the island's income.
