1st Choice for Holiday Rentals on Koh Phangan

Ko Pan Yang Thailand

Located in the Gulf of Thailand half way between Koh Samui to the south and Koh Tao to the north, Ko Pan Yang enjoys all-round sunny weather and calm warm seas. Famous most notably for its full moon parties where tens of thousands of travellers and visitors gather on the beaches around Had Rin in the southeast, Ko Pan Yang has a lot more to offer than revelry. The island is popular for its dramatic nature with pristine powdery beaches, dense forest and stunning scenery as well as for being surrounded by some of the clearest blue water in the Thai Gulf. Not as large as Koh Samui, but larger than Koh Tao, the island boasts several remote beaches where visitors can achieve privacy and some of that laid back beach life for which Thailand is so famous.

Since there is no airport on Ko Pan Yang, the only way of getting there is by boat. Ferries leave daily from the mainland cities of Chumpon and Surat Thani in the south of Thailand as well as from the neighbouring islands. The trip from Koh Samui only takes around 30 to 40 minutes on a high speed catamaran ferry. Because of the lack of airport, Ko Pan Yang has developed in a slightly different way to Koh Samui which has seen an increase in high-end luxury resorts and hotels and a more commercialised entertainment and retail industry. Apart from the full moon party, most entertainment and shopping on Ko Pan Yang is limited to the occasional beach bar and the independent clothes shop.

Of course, one can’t mention Ko Pan Yang without mentioned the full moon party. The centre around which everything around the southern tip of island evolves – hotel and even food choices are pitched around this monthly event – the full moon party attracts tens of thousands of people every month, bringing in significant revenue to the island. Starting out as a one-day party in later years the party ha stretched so it now also entails the couple of days before and after the actual natural event with the most popular bars along the beach featuring their resident DJs plus the occasional regional or intentional act. Hostels, hotels and resorts tend to get very busy during this period so booking in advance is highly recommended.

Apart from the full moon party, visitors come to the island for its beaches. Chalok Lam on the northern side of the island is a long sandy beach without too many tourists. The next bay along, Thonglang Bay is a beautiful quiet beach with few visitors and clear waters. Further along the coast in Haad Khom, a quiet beach offers great snorkelling and an original island feel. There are only a few accommodation choices on this stretch of beach, adding to the privacy, many of them still only offering electricity during the night. However, it is also now possible to find private villas for rent in various locations around the island. These offer a perfect choice for those in search of absolute peace and privacy on what remains one of Thailand's least spoilt tropical getaway islands.
